the concept

Growing up, I saw a huge push to get women to go into STEM fields. This is great, but getting women into the room is only the first step, now we need to focus on making STEM fields a safe and equitable space for women to work in. In my research, I found jarring statistics about inequality, mistreatment, and even assault in STEM fields. I also found an article from the Harvard Business about unrooting masculine defaults in the work place that largely inspired my approach to this problem. Based on this article, I divided the posts into different content pillars that highlight articles, people, and organizations as well as some inspirational posts to avoid a discouraging tone. To this point, I also wanted to prioritize sharing actionable information about how to address the problem at hand so it doesn't seem so daunting and immovable. Visually, I implemented a more radical and edgy style to emphasize the major structural changes that must occur to make these workspaces viable for women.

the takeaways

Reflection

Designing a social media campaign to promote safer and more equitable workplaces for women in STEM through a digital photo collage style was eye-opening. I learned how visuals can tell powerful stories, capturing the essence of our cause in a compelling way. Sharing the collage sparked discussions and connected people across diverse backgrounds. Above all, I realized the importance of empathy and storytelling. By sharing the experiences of women in STEM, we aimed to foster understanding and inspire action. Overall, this experience taught me valuable skills in visual communication, community engagement, and empathy, which I'll carry forward in future advocacy efforts.
